What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are titanium rods that are inserted deep into the bone of your jaw. The implant will naturally fuse with the bone over the course of a few months during a process known as osseointegration. Once the implant has completely fused into the bone, it’s a viable anchor for other restorations like crowns, bridges and even complete dentures. You can utilize implants if you’re missing one or more of your natural teeth.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
Dental implants are often needed if you’re missing one or more of your teeth. Implants can easily last for up to 30 decades without showing any signs of wear. Implants don’t just replace the top portion of a tooth, but its roots as well. This makes them a secure and highly sought-after restorative option for improving the look of the smile.
Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?
To be a good candidate for dental implants, you need enough solid bone structure in the area the implant posts will be placed. If you’re missing bone in these areas, a simple bone grafting can be done to further build up this area and make the implants heal more successfully. You should be healthy enough to undergo the procedure before it is done. We can examine your teeth and go over any and all medical history to determine if you’ll need an implant.
What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?
The procedure starts with either a local or general anesthetic according to your needs. We then make a small incision through the gums and insert a titanium implant post deep into the bone. The gums may be sutured to promote even healing. It’s important to follow all aftercare instructions to ensure that the implant heals successfully. Your implant will bond with the bone in about six months. You can then come back in and have new restorations made for the top of the implant.
